The Mediterranean Sea Research Center of Israel (MERCI) is currently the largest consortium of the predominant Israeli entities carrying out research and education on the Mediterranean Sea and its diverse environments. The consortium, which was established in 2012, comprises all 9 Israeli academic research universities and institutes, 1 college, and 2 governmental research institutions : The University of Haifa, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ben Gurion University, Bar Ilan University , Tel Aviv University, Weizmann Institute of Science, Reichman University, Ariel University, Ruppin Academic Center, Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR), and the Geological Survey of Israel. MERCI was established and driven by the vision to create cutting-edge marine science capacities for Israeli scientists working on the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
