“My name is Rotem Zirler. I’m currently pursuing my M.Sc. thesis in Ecology and Environmental studies at the School of Zoology, Faculty of Life Sciences, Tel-Aviv University under the supervision of Dr. Omri Bronstein.

My research focuses on evaluating benthic biodiversity in marine natural reserves (NRs) and newly suggested NRs along the Israeli coast of the Mediterranean Sea. I deploy innovative settlement structures called Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS). The ARMS imitate the structural complexity of the seafloor hard-substrate, facilitating colonization by local organisms. A year past deployment, the ARMS units are being retrieved and replaced. The units undergo thorough inspections using traditional taxonomical tools as well as cutting-edge molecular technologies, allowing credible identification and comprehensive monitoring than ever before.

I am highly fascinated by nature, animals and of course – the sea, and try to spend as much of my time combining those passions.”
