“My name is Chen Kenigsberg; I am a Ph.D. student at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in Prof. Sigal Abramovich Foraminiferal Research Laboratory.
I study benthic foraminifera as a model system for the ecological response to global change. Foraminifera are unicellular organisms common in all oceanic and marine habitats. There are 2000 ~ species of skeleton builders living today. Foraminifera are used as bio-indicators to understand the magnitude and effect of anthropogenic and natural contaminators such as nutrient overload, oxygen or temperature concentrations, high salinity, etc. Since these organisms are very sensitive to environmental conditions. The foraminiferal mineral skeleton records real-time contaminants in the ambient water; therefore, it can be used in various geochemical analyses. In addition, the foraminiferal shell can serve us as a comparison to the dead assemblage and reconstruct past geological periods.
My BSc and MSc I did in natural sciences at Ben Gurion University.
I like the sea and the research and the possibility to combine the two in my work. “
