Dear colleague,

It is a pleasure to announce the next course on  Microsensor Analysis in the Environmental Sciences,

which will take place at the Marine Biological Station, Rønbjerg, Denmark from May 31 to June 9, 2016.

The course is given in even years and has been very popular since its start in 2000, attracting a large number of international applicants.

A common positive remark in the course evaluation is the strong focus on giving the participants practical skills and hands-on experience with various microsensor methodology.
Especially, the opportunity to conduct an intensive experimental project over 4-5 days using modern microanalytical tools, in small groups with dedicated supervisors, is mentioned as unique for this PhD course.
In several cases, scientific publications have actually been based on studies/measurements initiated during the course project part and followed up by additional studies later on.

The course announcement is attached as a flyer that we hope you will help publicize

to notify students of this research training opportunity. Please do also forward this e-mail to colleagues and students.

Additional guest lecturers and further information will be announced on the course web-site http://www.mbl.ku.dk/mkuhl/microsensor2016,

which will be online by late February.

(see also previous course site: http://www.mbl.ku.dk/mkuhl/microsensor2014/index.html)

call for abstracts – ASLO/OSM meeting New Orleans 21-26 Feb 2016

Dear Colleague,

We are organizing a session on “The impacts of seawater desalination on the marine and coastal environment” (ID# 9245) within the upcoming 2016 Ocean Sciences Meeting to be held in New Orleans (21-26 February 2016) http://osm.agu.org/2016/ . Abstract submission deadline: September 25, 2015.

Seawater desalination is expanding worldwide as the solution for increasing water shortages with the extensive construction of large-scale plants occurring along many coastal environments. Yet, environmental research examining the impacts of this industry on the coastlines and their ecology is relatively scarce. We believe that increasing emphasis and scientific investigation of these issues are especially timely and should be encouraged to elucidate potential concerns.. Therefore, in view of your expertise, we invite you to submit an abstract to this session to promote your research (Abstract submission deadline September 25, 2015). We welcome abstracts that explore the impacts of seawater desalination on the physical, chemical, biological, and ecological aspects of the marine environment: in situ field measurements, controlled laboratory studies, modelling, integration of different methodologies, and subsequent applied measures such as decision making and regulation.

We look forward to meeting you in New Orleans.

We would appreciate it if you could forward this mail to your students and colleagues.

Sincerely,

Nurit Kress and Ilana Berman-Frank

Dear colleagues,

As you might all know that 2015 is the year to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. In 2015, Member States will adopt ambitious and action-oriented post-2015 developments goals. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is on the front line to give its contribution to this process.

As part of its contribution UNECE is organizing "Ideas for Change Award: Innovation for SDGs" competition. The event will showcase how innovative entrepreneurial talent can contribute to meeting today’s social and environmental challenges and SDGs through new groundbreaking ideas that can become successful businesses.

The competition is open to young companies and to teams of entrepreneurs, researchers and students from the UNECE region. The deadline for entering is 28 February 2015. Finalists will be invited to present their projects to a jury and to the participants in the 2015 UNECE session from 14 to 16 April. Winners will be honoured at an award ceremony towards the end the session.

You can find the call for ideas and all necessary information on our website at: http://www.unece.org/ideas4change/

We would like to kindly request you to forward this information to the relevant representatives in your country such as business associations, incubator centres and small and medium enterprises. This competition is also a good opportunity for companies and entrepreneurs to come up with innovative ideas and solutions to promote green and healthy mobility and transport.

Many thanks and with kind regards,
